The next stage which is the dome of the Stupa, also known as the “anda” or “garbha,” is the central and most important part of the structure. This rounded, often hemispherical, shape symbolises Mount Meru, the cosmic mountain at the centre of the universe in Buddhist cosmology. The dome represents the universe itself, reflecting the wholeness and interconnectedness of all things.
Within the dome lies the relic chamber, where sacred relics, such as the remains of the Buddha or other revered figures, are enshrined. This makes the dome the spiritual heart of the stupa. For devotees, the dome is the focal point during rituals like circumambulation, where they walk around the stupa in meditation, connecting with the sacred relics inside.
Structurally, the dome provides the foundation for the upper parts of the stupa, such as the square chamber and spire. Its solid, massive form ensures the stability of the entire structure, symbolising the unshakable nature of the Buddha’s teachings.
While the dome’s shape can vary from smooth and rounded to more elongated forms its purpose remains the same: to embody the universe and house the sacred relics. The simplicity of its design reflects its spiritual significance, though some stupas may feature decorative elements that enhance its symbolic meaning.
Working on the dome of the stupa has been a deeply meaningful stage in the project. This part of the construction is special because it involves creating the sacred space that will soon be sealed once all the relics are inside. It’s more than just building; it’s about preparing a place that will hold something sacred.
Enclosing the relics within the dome carries a strong sense of responsibility. Once sealed, the dome will protect these sacred items, preserving their sanctity for the future. This step symbolizes the careful planning and devotion that have gone into the project, turning the dome into the spiritual heart of the stupa.
The knowledge that the relics will soon be placed inside adds a sacred atmosphere to the work. Every action, every part added to the dome, is done with the awareness that this space will soon become a focus of worship and meditation, where people will come to connect with the divine.
As the dome nears completion, there’s a feeling of both achievement and solemnity. Knowing that this sacred chamber will soon be sealed gives the work a deeper significance, as the dome becomes a timeless repository of spiritual energy.
This stage of the project is not just about physical construction but also about creating a lasting spiritual symbol. The dome will stand as a symbol of protection, sanctity, and the eternal presence of the Buddha.
