Temple Update February 2026

Sri Suddhodana Maha Sya Rajanyan’s bamboo work is adorned with sacred and intricate carvings, each telling a story of life, beings and the path of the Dhamma. At the front, a carving depicts the lotus pond, full of life and symbolism.

In this pond, the lotuses are not all the same some rise gracefully, untouched by the shadows below, some are slightly marked, showing the traces of struggle and others are deeply weighed down beneath the surface. This reflects the nature of beings in our world some carry fewer burdens, some more and some are entangled deeply in worldly life. Yet when the Sri Saddharma is heard, even those with the heaviest layers the lotuses touched by the sun’s gentle rays can awaken, recognise the truth and cross beyond the cycle of existence. The lotus pond with its sunlight becomes a symbol of clarity, insight and liberation.

On one side of the carving swans are depicted and they represent the monks and disciples who have dedicated their lives fully to the Dhamma. With their light and free wings, swans can move gracefully and unhindered. They can travel anywhere they wish, their path unobstructed, symbolising the freedom that comes from renunciation and spiritual discipline.

On the other side peacocks are carved, representing the Gihi Upasaka and Upasika the household followers. The peacock’s wings are magnificent, yet it cannot fly as lightly or freely as the swan its flight carries weight, a reflection of the responsibilities and attachments that lay life brings. Moving through life, practicing the Dhamma while fulfilling worldly duties, is the sacred effort  the “tax”  the peacock must bear. Its journey shows that beauty and devotion are not absent from worldly life, but they require effort, balance and mindfulness.

Together these carvings tell a profound story the natural world, the beings within it and the different ways we move toward liberation. Some move lightly, some carry weight, yet all are touched by the rays of wisdom, all can awaken if they open their hearts to the teachings. Each carving is a reminder of the harmony between life, practice and the path to awakening.
