Temple Update January 2026

On 21 December, Mahamevnawa Meditation Monastery held a heartfelt and meaningful event in honour of Arhat Anuruddha, one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha and a first cousin of Gautama Buddha. Known for his attainment of the “divine eye” (dibba‑cakkhu), Arhat Anuruddha possessed profound spiritual insight allowing him to see the truths of existence with clarity and depth. His life exemplifies meditative mastery, steadfast devotion and unwavering dedication to the Dhamma serving as an enduring inspiration for practitioners on the path of awakening.

The ceremony at the monastery included Dhamma chanting, puja (worship) and meditation allowing participants to cultivate focus, gratitude and mindfulness. Traditional offerings of flowers, incense, candles and more were made as an expression of respect for the arahants and the teachings of the Buddha, highlighting the importance of devotion and reflection in our spiritual practice.

Honouring Arhat Anuruddha provides an opportunity not only to celebrate his accomplishments but also to pause and reflect on how we can embody his qualities in our own lives. This observance encourages us to look inward and consider:

  • Meditative steadiness: How often do we allow ourselves true stillness observing our minds without distraction? By practicing calm awareness we cultivate inner peace and clarity.
  • Clarity and insight: Are our actions and intentions aligned with our deepest values? Reflection allows us to see patterns, make mindful choices, and move forward with purpose.
  • Devotion to practice: Daily life can be busy and overwhelming but even small acts of mindfulness, meditation or compassion strengthen our spiritual path and bring us closer to understanding.
  • Inner calm amidst challenges: Life will always present obstacles. Like Arhat Anuruddha we can learn to remain composed, respond with clarity and navigate difficulties with grace.

This celebration reminds us that spiritual growth is not only about knowledge or rituals but about the qualities we cultivate within ourselves. By reflecting on the life of Arhat Anuruddha we are inspired to deepen our practice, nurture insight and bring steadiness, clarity and devotion into our everyday lives.

Let this observance serve as a gentle invitation to pause, reflect and reconnect with our spiritual path. Let us draw inspiration from Arhat Anuruddha’s life and allow his example to guide our meditation, our practice and the way we engage with the world around us.
