Book Review: The Body Keeps the Score

The Body Keeps the Score

The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk

I just finished reading and listening to The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk and I feel like I’ve been handed a roadmap for understanding the body, mind and soul in ways that are often overlooked. This book isn’t just about trauma it’s about healing, reclaiming yourself and remembering that the body holds the story of everything we’ve lived through.

Van der Kolk’s work is profound yet accessible. He reminds us that trauma isn’t just in the mind it’s in the body, stored in ways that can affect our relationships, our health and our very sense of self. Reading it, I found myself nodding, tears coming and moments of deep recognition. So many of the clients I work with experience this how unhealed trauma shows up in tension, anxiety or patterns they can’t explain.

What I love most is that this book doesn’t leave you in despair it gives tools. From yoga and mindfulness to EMDR and neurofeedback, there is a strong emphasis on reconnecting with your body to reclaim your life. It’s a reminder that healing isn’t just about thinking differently it’s about feeling differently, safely and fully.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your body, disconnected from your emotions or simply curious about how trauma impacts the brain and nervous system, this book is a must-read. It will challenge you, comfort you and ultimately, inspire you to start listening to your body as the greatest guide on your healing journey.

Warm regards,

Joy
